View Full Version : Locking topics

I know I'll probably get flamed for posting this, just like everyone else when they come forward and suggest something.
But anyway, it's really annoying when mods lock topics and don't provide a reason, and just state it was locked on 'request'. Who are these people who request locks, and why aren't their reasons stated in the final post by the moderator? If it's the OP requesting a topic to be locked, their wishes shouldn't be considered god - if they were, then why don't we just let people lock their own topics?
As a community, it's reasonable to allow moderators to make their own decision on whether or not a topic should be locked, but it's unreasonable to just end a discussion without telling anyone why.
It's nothing personal towards any mods, because it used to happen before on the old site and I've noticed many moderators doing it.
edit: shit, wrong section. oh well, i'm sure we can still have a civil discussion without all the bureaucratic bullshit.

I don't understand why you would get flamed at for suggesting this and i've got no problems with locked threads so far so yea :)

"Locked by request" Is by the person who created the topic reporting or pming a staff member asking for it to be locked.

Well it's not a serious issue and doesn't happen much, but it's just annoying when you're having a discussion and suddenly the topic gets locked and you don't even get given a reason.
But yeah people normally get flamed for posting stuff like this, RL is a bit communist.
Edit: I know loop, but if they have the power to lock a topic (which I don't think is right anyway), why don't we just let them do it themselves?

Runelocus use to have that option. But people abused it by thinking they won a fight ( Argument in a topic ) by getting the last word in and locking it so they cant reply.
So iki removed the option.
I suggested this in the old forums before the reset and iki said he wasnt going to add it back

I don't see why it concerns you or why you should be concerned; usually the reason is blatant and shouldn't need to be provided.

Being flamed at or anything els is just a normal behavior here. It's nothing special. When i was reading a couple of threads (before the new start) then at least in every thread one person gets flamed at.
Just ignore it :)

No I completly agree with you, people shouldn't have the right to lock their own topics, but moderators do see it as their right when they are asked to lock a topic.

Um, because I'm a member here and I post in the topics that are potentially locked?

If that's the case then why do you need to be provided a reason if it's that blatant? I'm not trying to be a dick, just curious.

The person who created the thread can report their thread and request a lock, the rest of the people can't however the mod can lock by themselves if they feel the thread is spam/flame/offensive etc.

As he stated above, He is normally having a discussion and all of the sudden a Topic locks, And to be honest, I've seen that quite frankly aswell.

>.> Seriously...
Alright, listen.
Topics get locked for three reasons.
1. Locked because the thread is breaking a rule.
A. This may happen when...
a. The thread becomes a spamfest
b. The thread becomes a flame war
c. The thread advertises for another site
d. The thread is in the wrong section
e. The thread is multi posted
2. The creator of a thread sent a lock request via PM to a staff member.
A. Someone may request a lock because...
a. The problem has been solved (Help section)
b. The thread has gone from a genuine topic to a flame war (Intelgiant Debate Section)
3. Someone other than the creator sends a lock request
A. Someone may request a lock because...
a. The thread is breaking a rule
b. They see that the thread is a flame war
c. The thread is multi posted
Hopefully that can answer any questions about why a thread got locked >.>...

I always say 'locked by request' or something like that when the Topic Creater asks for a lock.
If another person says that topic has to be locked for some reason, I will always provide the reason.
I will not provide the reason if it's obvious, like a troll thread.

^Lol. I like the lock by request thing because once the thread is already "solved" the rest is just spam lol.

it's unreasonable to just end a discussion without telling anyone why.
This is why I don't want regular members to have the power to lock their own threads ;)
Anyway, I usually lock with a reason, I just don't comment on the common ones like some suggestions. When somebody posts a suggestion for the 20th time, I'm really not bothered replying to the thread.

The topic locked there are serval reason behind it . The site itself locked it. Or the number of user register the site for spamming purpose or to many suggestion already given on that topic.
