View Full Version : What's wrong with my computer?

Whenever I turn on my laptop, I type in the password to login to the account, and then I wait like a few minutes, click on chrome, or whatever, and then the screen just goes black?
I tried taking out the battery and holding the ON button for 20/30 seconds and then trying again, but it did like 2 a minute savior. I moved my laptop from this desk I've had for like 5 years, to the carpet, and miraculously it isn't going black atm, but I'm sure there's something else, because I've used the desk for a while, and it just started turning black like 3 days ago.
Anybody know why?
That would be great to know, thanks in advanced. ;) :D

Yeah, I saw on this website that the light-bulb might be bad, but I don't think so, and my dad wont buy a new one, because they said that the Toshiba lights cost as much as half the computers original price.
Please comment if you know what's wrong, thanks.

Does the system like not respond when this happens (like no sound playing etc that you can, tell without the use of the screen)?

If I squint and get up very closely, I can still see the computer screen and what's on it, but only some stuff, other stuff I can barely see, because the light is basically dimmed to the max, and plus, I have bad eyes and no glasses.

Screen goes black could be:
Graphics card failing/overheating
Processor failing/overheating
Faulty RAM
Screen failing (or connection between screen and graphics card)
It's going dim?
Check power saving settings and Intel GMA program.

I bought a computer cooler at like Michaels or Marshalls for $10.00, I plugged it in, cooled it down a lot, I only bought it at the end of Ramadan, which was the last day of the last month - it didn't have this problem like stated, 3 or more days ago.
I only have 1 GB of RAM, and my dad paid this guy $150 to fix it, he put HP on my Toshiba (lol.)

I was about to suggest those faults, but hey :) And yeah about the power settings as well.

That's only brand, shouldn't matter.
If it's going DIM and not OFF then it's probably power saving settings or a mode in the Intel GMA settings.
1GB is pathetic, get some nuts, get a real laptop.

It used to have more, but the guy who switched my stuff replaced it, because before I couldn't do anything on the laptop, it had way more disk space as well, but now it only has like 43/70 gb left.
As for the power settings, it's always on high performance, and the charger is always plugged in, by dimmed I mean extremely dimmed, as I use emphasis on extremely.

Sounds like it could be the screen going mate.
Save yourself the hassle and just look at getting a new laptop.

My dad has 2 in the box in the closet still, but he doesn't want to open either of them. L
Thanks though, I'll see what's up, and also, atm it's not doing that, so maybe it's something wrong with the desk or the printer behind my laptop? It's on the carpet atm (what I'm using right now.)

May seem like a cheap way, but if his monitor is going and if his laptop has a DVI/VGA slot on his laptop then it's only the matter of getting a monitor.
Although as you said, 1GB is pathetic.
Sorry to say that too Dean.

It's not like I have a choice to pick the RAM, :(
I don't really do anything on the computer, I just have a research project I have to do, so that would suck.
I thought I would need an HDMI cable instead, to plug in to a monitor, such as a Television?

imho I wouldn't recommend using your TV for your laptop, as some text etc tend to shrink .. Then again my friend tested his laptop screen on a ... idk the inch TV.

Well then if i'm correct, that'd be a big no-no :P Because the text would be hard to read.
Unless theres some sort of way to fix this, then yeah ..

Not sure why but everything went horrible.
It's luck of the draw.
