1. Click on "Start" in the bottom left hand corner of screen
2. Click on "Run"
3. Type in "command" and press enter

You should now be at an MSDOS [Command Prompt] screen.

1. Type "ipconfig /release" just like that, and hit "enter"
2. Type "exit" and leave the prompt
3. Right-click on "Network Places" or "My Network Places" on your desktop.
4. Click on "properties"

You should now be on a screen with something titled "Local Area Connection", or something close to that, and, if you have a network hooked up, all of your other networks.

1. Right click on "Local Area Connection" and click "properties"
2. Double-click on the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" from the list under the "General" tab
3. Click on "Use the following IP address" under the "General" tab
4. Create an IP address (It doesn't matter what it is. I just type 1 and 2 until i fill the area up).
5. Press "Tab" and it should automatically fill in the "Subnet Mask" section with default numbers.
6. Hit the "Ok" button
7. Hit the "Ok" button again

You should now be back to the "Local Area Connection" screen.

1. Right-click back on "Local Area Connection" and go to "properties" again.
2. Go back to the "TCP/IP" settings
3. This time, select "Obtain an IP address automatically"
4. Hit "Ok" again
5. You now have a new IP address

With a little practice, you can easily get this process down to 30 seconds.

Mention that this only works on Static IPs not Dynamic IPs ;) Overall good tutorial, will help the newbies..

EDIT: Oh and if using a router it'll just go to 192.168.x.x or whatever..

If your internet is

Internet -> Router -> Internal Network -> Comp.

Then changing you ip in that window will only change your Internal IP not your External

This made me laugh.

This will only change your internal (192.168.0.1) IP not your external (the one used for voting and bans).

Yes because relying on ignorance is a good security tactic.

It depends on whether you use a router or a modem, doesn't it?

Sucks that unplugging your modem doesn't actually change your IP address. All this does is refresh your local IP within your home network.
This doesn't change your IP address at all, only your ISP can assign you a new one, and it's highly unlikely speaking they designate one to you upon service creation.
