Yello, I want to make myself a server for...just various reasons. I want host games for the most part.

I am thinking I will get a Ubuntu server OS and strip allot of the gunk off it to make it run smooth.

What should I buy as in like a motherboard or cpu? Does it need to be like REALLY good like a gaming pc or just something average the server won't be hosting like 10,000 people or anything.

What will it be hosting exactly.

Will it be like a general server that powers a network of computers?
A computer dedicated to hosting a private server?
A computer dedicated to hosting a game server - Call of Duty dedi for example?

Also, when hosting you need to consider your broadband connection. If your upload is low (500kB/s or less) then you've got no hope in hosting even if you had an i7 980X.

Mostly I will be using it for Game Servers like Counter Strike, CoD 4, and Halo CE.
Also maybe hosting a RSPS possibly.

Hosting is more RAM intensive than anything else really.

How much are you willing to spend?

Don't forget, it also depends on your source stability and players.
