Well I have been told that the REAL only way to get better at rsps java programming, is to start making stuff yourself. Well I have been learning java out of a book I got for hannukah, and I have been using eclipse and netbeans for everything. But the thing is, I have no idea how to create anything rsps related with netbeans or eclipse, like how to get it all organized, and how to create everything from scratch. I just don't understand how the stuff in the book I am learning from which teaches methods, class files, applets, main blocks, has to do with rsps. I mean in rsps you have to import stuff, and do like getPlayerDetails(). And like I would never even know when to put a "!" or a () or something like that, I just don't get how all the java stuff in that relates to rsps. And I just don't get how to set up rsps files with an IDE like, how would you check to see if it works? Can someone just like tell me how to set up stuff and how it relates? thanks guys, I really want to like enhance my java knowledge, any help would be great! jkatzjk96@hotmail.com

There's a difference between knowing Java and knowing RSPS.
When you learn Java, it's like learning a new language. At first everything is confusing and jibberish but then things start clearing up. The knowledge you're gaining from that book will allow you to take a basic source and client such as Delta or PI and be able to modify code. Opening Notepad and making an RSPS is near-impossible.
Read your book, good on your for it too, because when you're done with RSPS you can move onto bigger things. Like Minesweeper. :)
Just find a nice base to start with and start messing around with the easier things and learning how RSPS are set up. Like making custom commands or adding new items.

Java and java game development are very different. I'm not saying learning java is useless for rsps. Learning the basics however. Keep with it.

Dick.
I suggest you start off with C&P tutorials or learn the basics of Java. I think Rico made a tutorial.
edit: nevermind, Rico made it on the old forums(got reset).

However, a teacher can explain you things that you don't completely understand. If you experiment you will figure things out too, but it will take a looong time. If you want to make an RSPS with an IDE I suggest you first figure out the features of the IDE and then start learning about threading/packets/object orientated programming. If you know a fair amount of those you'll be able to understand how an RSPS works completely and how to make one. I hope this helped.

Guys this was last year... And yes I learned. People helped me, I went to java development camp, I opened my own project from scratch, and I did tutorials including the one Faab mentioned above.
