There is a Program Called; Print Screen. It's a Program Created by Microsoft, So if you click on "Print Screen", Go to paint and do "CTRL+V", Then you have a Photo of your Desktop.

I use a program, lets you take videos too. It's called Debut Video Recording Software. I'm happy with it and got it for free (it costs $$$)

I use cropper soon as i click it's icon it lets me select my desktop i want to crop, then after i approve it(click a check mark on side) it auto-uploads to a website (its usually tinypic) and then gives me link.
You can control what it does through settings tho. but if u want to just take screenie of the whole desktop, then use keyboard like others said.
