View Full Version : Android vs iOS

This thread is posted in the INTELLIGENT debate section, because I don't want silly answers that lead to no where. Protect your side, and I'll protect mine, WITH FACTS.
I'm mainly focusing the thread on iOS5, but I renamed the title so it's iOS in general, that gives both parties more room to debate in.
iOS users seem to be getting really hyped up on the new things iOS5 has brought out...
such as drop down notification - Which Android has had since beginning.
Lockscreen Info - Which Android also has had, it requires a few tweaks, but it has, not all phones some.
If you guys didn't know... Apple decided to sue Samsung after what the Samsung Vibrant looked like (I own a Samsung Vibrant) and the UI, because it had "square application icons like iOS"
Shouldn't Google sue Apple for taking their ideas?
Now Apple goes and takes Android's whole major UI (drop-down notification) and tells the iFanboys "WE HAVE INVENTED A WHOLE NEW THING PEOPLE! REVOLUTIONARY!"
And what amazes me is, the iFanboys still seem to think that the drop-down notification and lockscreen info was JUST invented, and start jizzing over the carpet over it.
Debate your side, and again, remember this is Intelligent Debate.

I have an Android phone and an Ipod. I would say the new IOS 5 is pretty sick especially thing you can do when you have it jailbreaked with Cydia. Now Android on the other hand still has widgets which IOS doesn't have, you can also customize an Android more IOS with different kind of mods. If i had to choose a phone right now between Android and IOS. I would choose Nexus over the Iphone 4.

I've never owned an Android phone. I've had my 3Gs since Last March and never found a fault with it. It does everything I need it do, Email, phone, sms, facebook, twitter and sports updates and news. Obviously android can do this but I just like my iPhone and the only other phone I'm going to get will be an iPhone. I find the responsiveness of the touch screen very good and can type a lot quicker than I could on my mate's HTC Desire HD.
In all honesty though this debate is stupid and will encourage more fanboys to post and then a flame war will commence etc. It's boring, it's a mobile phone after all and to be honest they're both really good.
iOS5 looks amazing, I don't care if Android had most of the updates before, they're coming to iPhone which shows they must be effective enough for Apple to implement them. I also love the idea of WiFi syncing.

Thats what I'm trying to attract. FANBOYS from both sides, to have a debate. Both have their pro's and con's but fanboys think that their phone is best, and everything else sucks. Matty, you're not a fanboy, and I don't consider myself one either, I think both phone's are good, but for person preference Android does better... but then I agree that Apple is VERY organized.
Where Android is fragmented, Apple gives updates to all available phones all at once, where Android, you have to wait a few months after software is released before your phone that isn't a flag-ship gets it.

Disclaimer: I do NOT own neither an iPhone nor an Android. My opinion is solely based on screenshots and information around the internet.
Let all the tech stuff aside, I find iPhone's UI to be better designed. I'm not sure how much you can customize Android's, but the iPhone UI is a pleasure to the eye, at least for me.
Now, there are currently 500 thousand apps in the App Store (for the iPhone), and 294 thousands in the Android Market. 10 billion downloads from the App Store, and 3 billion from the Android Market. Those numbers are according to may 2011 from wikipedia.
That means that, currently, if you're an iPhone user you have more apps to chose from, and if you're an iPhone developer, your app has a bigger amount of users it can reach. Of course, that might change *soon*.
Considering that Android apps are written in java, whereas iPhone apps are written in objective-c, iPhone apps probably have a better performance, since it's compiled to machine code, and doesn't need to run the JVM.
I have no idea how well both OSes perform, though.
Now, in my opinion, objective-c is a disgusting language, so I'd much rather develop in java for the Android than in obj-c for the iPhone. Besides that, there are many more books about java than those about obj-c, so developers have more material to get started with the language,
whereas there are more iPhone development books (as far as I've seen).
Android has the clear advantage of running on many more (and cheaper) phones than iOS, and it's open-source. Android is also based on the linux kernel, so you can assume it performs well.
Also, this benchmark from 2010 shows that android (2.2) outperforms iOS (4) in javascript:

Anyone who says "Android doesn't look good" then you've not used Android to it's full potential.
You can get custom launchers and custom themes.
Hell you can get MIUI which basically gives you the performance of Android while retaining a similar look and feel to iOS.
Launcher7 makes your Android phone look like Windows Phone 7.
There's more to Android than first meets the eye.

Out of my personal experience Here is the cons of the two phone Iphone 4 and DroidX:
Iphone 4
closed SDK, must pay 99 dollars to develop. which is horse shiat.
Not a very good front camera
Hardware issues, (your finger covering up the antennae)
DroidX
freezes every now when im running tons of stuff
....... can't think of anything else :P
Android in itself is a better OS simply for the fact that it is open source and by google. Those two reasons can't be beaten by apple unless they follow the same suit. The reason Android will always be better is the HUGE community creating apps and making the whole system better as a whole, there will always be more options, phones, and possibilities that will always follow last in the apple world.

^ Exactly.
Toon, just wondering, you tried the new WP7 Music by the guy who made Launcher Pro? Only the registered members can see the link. Give it a shot its great!
Android has many customization. Themes, Icon changes ,you can make your phone into any other OS you want (looks) and this is all without going further than a idiot user. You can do themes, which are basically icon changes on iOS, but you need Jailbreak, and Jailbreak my friend... is a hard price to pay. IDK if Cydia has gotten faster, or if Jailbreak has gotten better, but back in the day, Cydia took literally 5 minutes to load, and Jailbreaking was hard to do ( until that jailbreakme.com came out or something)
The notification bar -pull-down is one of Android's greatest Pros there is... and now iOS is just openly stealing it. Okay.. so doesn't pull down your actual status bar... but its basically doing that, you drag down and a interface comes where what ever is ongoing on your phone comes up.
What makes me mad is the iFanboys think its the first time they've seen this kind of new technology that lets them pulldown status/notif. bar!
Android has a community. Apple does not. Community meaning people who work together to accomplish something.
Android you root, which takes literally 1 to 5 clicks depending on your phone... and flash any custom ROM made by the people.
The only thing I worry about Android is
1) the market is TOO open. Google needs to make market bit more strict, because malware is getting in now that Android is in the top lead.
2) the fragmentation, updates are slow to all the android phones, some android's that are high end are still on 2.1 and 2.2 right now. and their planning on releasing 3.0 already???!

Agree.
That music app is actually awesome, may have to buy it when it's out.
I do quite like parts of WP7.
Iphones need to be less popular, Apple's ad about "You should buy an iphone JUST BECAUSE WE HAVE THE APPSTORE SO YOU DON'T BECOME A LOSER" needs to change imo. Other than that, I'm all for Android. Seems like a cleaner system in a sense. I personally have an Itouch, and it freezes a lot sometimes. It sucks, although it's only a 4 second freeze haha.

I have an antivirus on my phone now because of this issue. That really proves something in my opinion. Android is like a PC, which can be paralleled with Iphone being like a Mac. In which both have been out longer and thus i can compare the two. PC is open and anyone can make anything for them. It creates a really awesome network of amazing things that get discovered and improve the overall quality of life in the technology aspect yet it gives this foreboding sense that we don't know what everyone will make and it can screw us over if it infects us which is why antivirus was protected, where as Mac is closed and only what they release actually comes to fruition. Not many actual applications that are as amazing as some of the PC applications exist for Mac but they are very secure. I feel as though in the mobile device market, soon (within 10 years) it will try to take over the PC business and then the cycle of my Mac VS PC spiel will begin again.

Mac can get Viruses too, so that argument isn't really valid.
I'm all for Apple's method of checking for malware but they take it a step too far and if there's an app that IN ANY WAY would compete with ANYTHING they currently do or may offer then they ban it.
Apple need to open up A LOT more.
Google need to tighten up just a little.

I didn't say they couldnt get a virus i just said they are very secure, which is true. I do completely agree on the Apple needs to open up a lot more. I think good should scan the apps for malicious software, that would be plenty good for me. I love open source as it usually benefits everyone. The developer gets new ideas and help from the community and the community gets the source the coder uses. Mostly it works out. Like RSBot for example. They are very successful because they are open source. A lot of really cool, good scripts have come out of them. (that is a small scale example i don't know enough about google to spiel about their open source)

Completely disagree with what you're trying to say.
Every large and popular used electronic has been given some kind of malware, Android is getting popular. FAST. Faster than iOS ever did. Android has been in the market for a short time, yes i agree that Google can improve on their security in the market. Android being OPEN isn't what's bringing the malware in. I don't think Windows is open source - correct me if i'm wrong- yet Windows has viruses, but how can that be?! Open or Closed. Mac's have viruses too. I found this interesting article that I think you should read: Only the registered members can see the link.
Mac's aren't being infected because not a whole lot of people use Mac's. Apple's market shares for Mac's are low- very low compared to PC(windows) computers. Hackers are like Developers, actually they ARE developers., they need to target a few specific areas of where their product (virus) would do its best. There isn't much profit to be made by releasing a virus into the Mac community except to prove that Mac's can get viruses. Whereas on PC, you can grab 50 PC's at once. Thats why you get a Anti-Virus. Don't be stupid.

How many of you actually need to do more then the regular talking and texting? A smartphone is more than just a phone, but you're a teenager with no business, and nothing that's so important that you have to be browsing the web 24/7 on your phone.
I use to have a really good phone. got that stolen then bought a BlackBerry Storm and lost that. I said fuck it, it's just a phone and the phone I have now it cost me like
$45.00 to buy it pre-paid and it does everything that every phone I've had could do.
Because:

I've been thinking about this a lot personally.
I currently have an iPhone 4.
It's nice and fast and all that good stuff, but there is very little customization.
iPhones may have more apps with more downloads, but you have to think, how many of those apps even have the possibility to be good? iOS has been around longer than android, so that explains why there are so many apps downloaded.
I used to be an apple fanboy, but I realized that apple overprices everything.
I bought a Mac mini for ~$800, and I later built a PC for ~$800 that is more than 2x every spec of the Mac.
I really need to convince my parents to let me get an Android phone, rarer than sticking with my current iPhone.

I have an Samsung Mesmorize, its truly amazing. It has a much bigger and in some aspects, better screen than the iPhone 4. Also, the amount of applications avaliable on the Android Market such as 4shared allow you to download paid applications for free, and its on the android market. If you wanted to do this on the iPhone 4 you would have to jailbreak it, download cydia, download installous, and its just such a hassle. Also, Android allows you to "Root" a phone giving you Superuser controls, or in other words, Administrator controls, where as the iPhone 4 has nothing like that (as far as I know).
