View Full Version : Mentor section

I was thinking of having a section that allows people to look for mentors in programming, so they can actually learn by proper example and teacher then shitty copy & paste tutorials. Obviously having anyone making a thread saying their willing to teach wouldn't really allow those looking for a proper mentor much closure, so perhaps having a new member group or allowing only CM's and mods.
This is just an idea that came about from something similar I saw on a programming community that is unrelated to RSPS, and it seemed to work quite nicely. Comment/criticize on it, as I would definitely like to see something like this happen.
Good idea just not for now there is much more important updates to take place but that is my opinion :)

This is a good idea, i let people watch me code over team viewer, and i find that works well for teaching them stuff. but yeah good idea

^massive indeed
Though the suggestion is nice, we don't have many programmers good enough to mentor, and the one's we do have probably wouldn't want to dedicate their time to this.

If it means starting to remove the ignorance plaguing these forums and others, then I'm willing to devote whatever time I can to do so. Though Aff might be a little pissed, seeing as how I denied him this for a few years now. :p

Well I also had the idea a while ago about having a IRC channel dedicated to programming lessons. Obviously anyone would be able to join, but if they don't have op or voice then they would be muted by default. This should keep morons from teaching a bunch of people. The only downside is that the other users cant ask questions, and as such, the quality of the lesson will be diminished.

Nice. Would it be only for Java?
And would there be some kind of thread to apply to be a mentor?

I would think for whatever language the mentor in-question was willing to teach. As for how mentors would be decided; I cant see a thread for people to simply applying be allowed without some further proof of competency. If people who hardly know the subject start teaching, then the entire point of the system is ruined.

There's not many people even qualified to be a "mentor".

Just because someone asks for a mentor doesn't mean you _have_ to be theirs. I would think that mentors would obviously be given a choice to who they teach their knowledge to.

Ha, you said this to me yesterday and I totally took this the wrong way.
But yeah, support. It would be hard work for the mentors. But also the "mentee's" would learn a lot.

Good Idea but I think you could make it better by just making it General mentoring whether it be Programming, tutorials for other things, Life hax, information, ect.

looooooooooooooool.
Like I said though, there's no many people.
Personally, I'd like to be tutored in programming. The section would be a lot more useful with more qualified tutors.

There don't need to be many of them at the beginning, as the first 'student' learned enough, they can start to mentor other people.

not so sure if anyone would want to actually get taught some computer languages, since they're just in here for hosting a server, but it's a good idea, if your mentor is a good teacher :p

I don't see it happening anytime soon.

This was targeted for those actually willing to learn beyond the crap taught here and in other communities. Whether or not the majority is interested is hardly relevant.
