View Full Version : Getting rid of post based groups and ranking by time online?

Well, I for one always hated the post based ranks for every forum I've ever been too. It makes no sense, and even encourages spam to get a higher post based rank. Quite pointless and a pretty big mess for moderators. A solution to this?
I was recently browsing the SMF mod forums for a community I'm creating for a Counter Strike: Source clan I'm friends with, and I came across a great mod.
Member groups based on time online!

Why is this great? We see much less spam for post count, and the real active members get noticed more then those who just join and spam their hearts out. The ranks are literally earned through devout dedication and time spent on the forums. I'm sure there is a mod on the VB forums, and even if not, VB has a time spent online, Ikiliki could eventually make some tweaks for hours online rather then postcount! (sorry Ikiliki, Ily, but you know I don't have the access)

Thoughts guys?

I agree. This would (hopefully) decrease the amount of spam from the moronic members of this community. However, I believe that one flaw would be people idling on the site and refreshing every few minutes. Or the people who lurk here constantly to find guides/advertisements would end up being the highest ranked people, while the less active people from exams, etc, would be neglected.

Overall I'd say this is a fantastic idea. But is it possible to make this for vB?

Agreed, though you can simply get more uptime by not closing down Runelocus.
Might want to change that.

I'm pretty sure it times you out or something. 'Cause I remember years ago when I left mscp open overnight, I would only gain 1 minute of activity.

I don't consider anything forum spamming to be honest, People are just giving there thoughts into a rsps community and just generally chatting, It's not all for the ranks, Even though, I like mine, Some might call me a spammer, but i don't support this.

Let's look at Shishir. He's been banned for "sharing his opinion" TOO MUCH.

Coming from the guy with 800+ posts in under 2 weeks?
And ALOT of them where within the first what, 4 days?
You can't "generally chat" and "sharing thoughts" for 800 times per 4 days sir.

I agree with this idea also, hopefully stop the amount of spam in these forums.

I agree, But I still think you need to consider about the posts count.

I totally agree with this, post count is nothing, people think if they get a lot of posts they will become moderator.

Agree.
I got alot posts, But I never thought I will become a moderator because of this.
I post because I enjoy being at runelocus.
Else, All the moderators (Or most) at this site, Got lower then 200 posts, So yeah.

Ok, so.
How about replacing the requirements for groups with total time the user has been online.
Not removing the post count, but just not having post-count based groups.
Or is this what you mean?

Yeah, I think you are right.
That the groups will be based of the time users are online instead of thier posts count.

We should have rep rather then post count.
This way members will have to bring something to the community, and spamming will be useles.

Reputation makes the site a "OMG PLZ REP" forum.

Sort of.
But its better then having the forums spammed for post count.

Ikiliki

No, because it was hard to just suddenly remove it. Because we reset, I just didn't have to re-enable rep

I actually like this idea.
I'm sure this would get rid of alot of people on sites like sythe.org trying to earn a quick buck

I would say how much i've made off shit like sythe(although always on "acquired" accounts, and mastered devious plans lol), but i've recently been reported to ic3 and won't be saying anything as i'm not behind a ton of socks.

Actually, sessions time out in a couple minutes of inactivity. leaving it on all the time would result in a big depressing gain of a few minutes.
