phpbb or SMF

phpbb or SMF?
I started a project about a month ago, And I am just now getting to it.
It has nothing to do with runescape private servers,
And my main goal is to achieve a lot of traffic in the site.
It is a forum for just about every topic (except for pornography).
I am trying to achieve a well known site and I first wanted to know which forum is better?

(Not vbulletin because I do not have the money to buy a license, And I can live with other software.)

I prefer Mybb but if you had too choose from those two, i will go with SMF.

No way jose, I like the customization of SMF but vBulletin runs smoother and is overall way more beast than SMF will ever be. smfforfree ruined SMF for me just because I see so many shitty thrown together free forums that the ratio of finding a good SMF is very low.
