Well, I can get a $10 / month Linux vps with 1gb ram or I can get a windows VPS for $20 / month with 512 mb ram =3...

What's the difference and why is the Linux so much cheaper?

Linux is less of a memory whore, but everyone likes windows because it's so fucking overrated.

Edit: Oh, and no one knows how to use *nix systems because they're all retarded.

wat.

Linux is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> windows.

People just like Windows better because batch files and exes don't necessarily work on *nix systems.

What you using the VPS for?

If your running a site with .net and/or ASP.net then you need a Windows server.
If you're just hosting a site like RuneLocus then Linux will do you fine.

The main reason a linux server would be cheaper is because the OS is free compared to having to pay for a license for Windows.

:/ I'm running my server, and I may be running a site. [Although this is primarily for my server, I felt it would fit better here than the help section.]

Can you host your server on Linux? If so go with the Linux VPS.

You may be able to rewrite the compiler and run batch for terminal, don't rule it out.

Windows VPS will be easier though.

Java is cross platform.

Only problems you will run into is poorly written paths.

And you could run the .jar on a linux vps.

What I would do is create a virtual machine on your computer that runs Linux and test the server on that and if it runs fine and dandy you are all good to go with a linux vps.
